What Is Point Cloud Generation for Construction

Point cloud generation is the production of a dense, georeferenced 3D point cloud of the project site. We use aerial photogrammetry to produce millions of points, each with X, Y, Z coordinates and color information. The output is a single LAS or PLY file plus a registration report.

Point clouds are the foundation of high-density measurement, clash detection, and as-built verification. The point cloud is imported into AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, QGIS, Trimble Business Center, and most survey and BIM platforms, where it can be sliced, queried, and measured.

When to Use Point Cloud Generation

As-built verification: surveyors and engineers use point clouds to verify as-built conditions against the design, identifying deviations and supporting RFIs.

Clash detection: BIM teams use point clouds to detect clashes between new construction and existing conditions, supporting coordination and reducing rework.

High-density measurement: engineers and surveyors use point clouds for accurate measurement of distances, areas, and volumes, supporting quantity takeoffs and earthwork calculations.

Stockpile volumetrics: GCs and earthwork contractors use point clouds for stockpile volume calculations, supporting cut/fill reporting and material tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of point cloud generation?

Starting at $850 for sites up to 5 acres. Larger sites, multi-day flights, and GCP-heavy projects are quoted based on acreage and accuracy requirements.

How accurate is the point cloud?

1-3 cm ground sampling distance (GSD) with ground control points (GCPs) provides high relative accuracy. Without GCPs, expect 3-5x GSD. For absolute accuracy requirements, we coordinate with your surveyor or a local PLS.

What file formats are included?

LAS or PLY point cloud, registration report. Files drop into AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, QGIS, Trimble Business Center, and most survey and BIM platforms.
